Title: Avanyu - colorful

Artist: Jerome L. Martinez

The Tewa word for Rain serpent or plumbed serpent is Avanyu. This traditional design is found decorating the black on black pottery of the Tewa speaking Pueblo’s of the Rio Grande. The artist has three variations of this painting, this is called “colorful” because of the vibrant non-traditional colors. Within the Avanyu is the sacred night sky with floating Bear track designs, the Bear is symbolic for strength and healing. To the left and right are squash blossom designs and along the top and bottom borders are traditional cloud designs and a Sun symbol directly above and center.

The Artist has been painting for over 40 years and is one of many talented Great Grandchildren of world famed potter Maria Martinez.

The overall dimensions range from 8 x 12 to 18 x 26 inches.

Unsigned Giclée print on stretched canvas.

Please feel free to contact the artist if you have any questions at all.
